What if your undergraduate academic accomplishments were ample for graduation, but would not earn you any scholarly recognition? Will the EMBA program at Kenan-Flagler accept students who were late bloomers and hit their stride in their professional lives after their undergraduate studies?
Josh,
Our admissions committee takes considerable time to become familiar with each applicant’s full package, which includes a number of elements in addition to undergraduate grades: professional work experience, essays, recommendations, GMAT score and an in-person interview. If you did not “bloom” as you put it, until after your college years, I recommend using your interview to explain how you’ve grown and will be successful in the MBA for Executives Programs. We’re most interested in helping to shape the leader that you could become. If you’re concerned that you may need to brush up on your quantitative skills, there are a number of classes you can take to prep for the Program. In the meantime, just give us a call, and we can talk with you about your specific situation before you even apply. My number is: 919-962-2499.

I have strong undergrad grades (3.8 GPA), an excellent job and have progressed well through my career. I am a Certified Public Accountant and the CFO of a $180 million company. I took the GMAT’s a number of years ago and didn’t do so well. I would rate my writing skills at average but my communication skills extremely high. I don’t see myself retaking the GMAT test and scoring impressively well. Is the UNC Executive MBA Program something I should still pursue? Thanks for your time.
Mike,
We do a lot of pre-admissions counseling, and I would recommend this in your case. We can schedule time for you to speak directly with a program director about your specific situation. Specifically regarding GMAT: We review your score along with the rest of your application and are looking for the total package, rather than a specific GMAT score. That being said, we require the GMAT for our programs because it provides a good indication – along with your undergraduate transcripts – of whether you will be prepared for the quantitative rigor of the program. GMAT scores are good for 5 years; if yours are older than that, you will need to re-take the test.
Why don’t you give me a call, and we can talk some more. 919-962-2499.

Hi,
I’m interested in your weekend EMBA program and saw that GMAT score is required for that. Would like to know what is average GMAT score for this program or what is the 80% range of acceptable GMAT score of this program (preferably of current batch)?
Thanks.
Sumit,
Hello. We view GMAT as part of your entire application package, so we really are not focused on a particular score. That being said, the average GMAT for the Weekend Program generally falls in the 600-620 range. However, I am not recommending that you need to be within that range. We want to know that you are able to handle the quantitative rigor of the Program, so we will evaluate GMAT alongside your college transcripts and work experience.
If you want to discuss further, give me a call 919-962-2499.
Can students with a science background apply for the MBA Program?
Rahul,
Yes. Our executive MBA students have a variety of academic and professional backgrounds. While we do not require any prerequisite courses, we do require that students have a basic knowledge of accounting, finance, statistics and microeconomics. We can meet with you one-on-one to determine if you need to brush up on these skills. And, we offer review workshops on these topics to incoming students.
Christine Ferrell, Director of Marketing & Business Development
Hello. I am working on my MBA in Kentucky I want to know more about your program and the requirements to apply for it. Thanks.
Jose,
I’m glad you’re interested in our programs. Someone from our office will contact you tomorrow.
Christine Ferrell, Director, Marketing and Business Development
What type of prep courses do you recommend to brush up on quantitative skills?
Brian,
Prior to the beginning of each program start, we offer two refresher courses; they are offered on weekends. Each of the two weekend sessions covers three primary areas: microeconomics, accounting and probability/statistics. Many incoming students attend these classes, which are offered for a nominal fee. In addition, we provide all admitted students with some prep tools to review before starting the program. These tools include some online resources to help you brush up on your skills.
If, however, you believe you need to review your quantitative skills prior to taking the GMAT or applying to the EMBA Program, we may recommend a number of options, including taking a college-level course. We would want to talk with you and discuss your individual situation before making a specific recommendation. I will be in touch directly to learn more about your needs.
Christine Ferrell, EMBA Staff
Christine,
In reference to your response to Brian, do I understand correctly that your staff is available to meet with applicants to review quantitative skills and one’s plans to update these skills either prior to submitting or during the application process?
Lynda
Absolutely. We do a lot of pre-application counseling to help applicants determine what they can do to submit the best possible application. We can conduct this in person or over the phone. To schedule a meeting, call our office at 962-8863 and ask to speak to the director of the program you’re interested in. That would be Holly Rice for Evening Program, Anne-Marie Summers for the Weekend Program, or Jim Britton for the OneMBA Program. They will be the persons you meet with. You may also always contact me directly at 962-2499, and I can help coordinate your visit.
Christine
Ms. Ferrell,
I am taking the Manhattan GMAT course and will be taking the test in September. Will I be at a big disadvantage applying for the third round of the Weekend Program? The website recommended appling in the earlier rounds but as an older student I feel I needed the Manhattan course to perform well on the GMAT. Do you think it’s best to wait an apply in the first round next year or go ahead and apply for the third round?
Thanks.
Steven,
I completely understand your concern. While it’s always best to apply earlier rather than later, it’s equally as important to submit the best application possible. If for you, completing the the review course prior to taking the GMAT helps your application, I agree it’s the best course of action. We always keep spots available at each deadline, so you still have a solid opportunity for admittance. It’s just that the final deadline is slightly more competitive because fewer spots are still available. That being said, I think you are making the right decision.
I’m happy to speak further with you about your application, if you wish to do so: 919-949-1190.
Christine
Hello Christine,
I was unable to secure a spot in the 2009 UNC Fulltime MBA program due to an extremely competitive pool and being waitlisted in the 1st round. I am planning to reapply this year. Having 13+ years of industry experience, would I be able to apply to both the EMBA evening and the Fulltime MBA program? I’m still unable to decide. I work from home and schedule wise, either would work for me.
Hi Rupa,
Yes, you are certainly able to apply for both the Evening MBA and the Daytime MBA Programs beginning in August 2010. However, you would need to submit two separate applications, as the information we require is slightly different in each program. The first application deadline for the Evening MBA Class of 2012, which begins in August 2010, is usually in late January. We do, however, take early applications and will turnaround a decision in about 4 weeks. So, if you want to apply early , you can. Please feel free to call me with any questions: 919.962.2499.

Hi again Christine,
When you say “these payments actually
span three calendar years..” does that mean that I will have three years to pay, so I would have to make a payment
approximately every 4.5 months? Thanks.
Gabriela,
Here’s some additional information: You will receive a grade report upon completion of each class. This will contain your grade and the number of credit hours for the course and will either be placed in your file folder or mailed to you. On average, grades are reported 3 weeks after the final exam/project date which is at the instructor’s discretion. You can see a basic calendar of classes here:
emba_evening_courseseq.pdf
Gabriela,
Regarding your follow up question about payment schedules, the basic answer is “yes.” I will, however, forward a detailed payment schedule to you next week, which is when it will be finalized here.
For the Evening MBA program, Can you
tell me with what frequency, during the
program, do we get offical result of
our grades? in other words when do the
students get their grades? This is
important for me because I need to
figure out tuition payment vs company
tuition refund. Thanks.
Gabriela,
We bill the $71,000 Evening MBA tuition in eight installments during the program; these payments actually span three calendar years (program is 24 months, though). I am going to send you the payment schedule.
Regarding your specific question about grades: We are very used to working with companies and students on tuition reimbursement; we know that many companies will not reimburse you until you have grades. I have requested a specific answer on grades and will post that shortly.
